Hokkaido JALT:

The Foundation on the First Floor: The Language Center, Radical Change, and Globalization

Date: Sunday, August 4th, 2019 Time: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Speaker: Andrew Ross, Harvard University

Description:
Throughout Japan, and Hokkaido in particular, technology has had an enormous impact on education in general and especially on language education. Over the past few years, many national universities in Hokkaido have been sharing courses using technology. We are also seeing course contents being shared between educators and institutions and MOOCs are being organized more frequently. To cut costs, institutions are increasingly asking their educators to use technology to teach across campuses, but offering little or no incentive to do so, and not supplying teachers with the necessary training in some cases. When we look at the issue from a global perspective it becomes even more complex. In Europe, telecollaboration and virtual exchange are changing the way campuses provide their students with courses and opportunities to study. Projects like the International Virtual Exchange Project also offer students opportunities to interact in an international setting without leaving their own country. But how does this fit into a traditional classroom? We are very fortunate to have Andrew Ross the Director of the Language Center at Harvard University offer some views from the United States on some of the ways these issues are being handled there. More details of his talk are at jalthokkaido.net.
